Controversial Reactions Following Charlie Kirk’s Announced Death Anniversary
On the one-year anniversary of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, there were some harsh reactions from certain leftist factions. It was, well, surprising, and at times, unsettling to see comments implying that the conservative figure had somehow brought this upon himself.
For instance, a radical left-wing Instagram account called “The Culture Beat,” which has about 40,000 followers, made a pretty harsh statement: “Charlie Kirk was a piece of shit.” They shared some quotes alleged to be from Kirk, where he discussed affirmative action, and it just felt, I don’t know, a bit distasteful to me.
The account criticized Kirk’s influence on what they called the right-wing media landscape, claiming he played a significant role in radicalizing a whole generation of young men. They were referring to some of the viral videos that showcased his debates with college students, which have, I think, reached millions.
There was a certain bitterness in their tone as they recounted how Turning Point USA strategically placed Kirk in front of students, capturing videos that showcased him “dismantling” arguments. The captions they used—like “Charlie Kirk ANNIHILATES”—sounded almost mocking, and it was annoying to read.
They even took issue with the success of Turning Point USA, lamenting about Kirk’s content being shared widely on platforms such as YouTube and TikTok, suggesting it helped spread conservative viewpoints far beyond campuses.
It felt like there was a tinge of jealousy in their words as they described Kirk’s work as a gateway into a “much larger ecosystem” that opposed leftist ideologies. I mean, accusations flew about Turning Point USA being connected to “resentment toward women, immigrants, LGBTQ people, and racial minorities,” which was, I think, quite a stretch.
While they said Kirk and Turning Point USA shouldn’t be blamed for radicalizing anyone specifically, they argued that the duo was conscious of the media landscape they were fostering. It was a complicated statement, highlighting a mix of accountability and denial at the same time.
They closed their rant with a rather insulting comment, saying, “Thanks for the hate, rest in piss Charlie,” which seemed to echo sentiments that many have associated with the potential incitement of violence against conservatives—something hard to overlook given the context of Kirk’s death.
Meanwhile, in stark contrast, Thursday saw an outpouring of support for Kirk across social media, marking the anniversary of his tragic assassination. He was killed while attempting to engage in a dialogue with a student at Utah Valley University, an act that many viewed as an attempt to promote free speech.
On the same day, Turning Point USA organized a memorial event at the Utah campus to honor his legacy, titled “Freedom Built to Last.” It’s bittersweet, really—reflecting on a life cut short while also acknowledging the impact he had on many.
