Shift in Immigrant Voter Sentiment Towards Trump
Recent polling indicates that naturalized immigrant voters have moved closer to President Donald Trump’s views on immigration, particularly amid the economic struggles linked to President Joe Biden’s administration.
This shift seems to deal a significant blow to the Democrats’ strategy of trying to bolster their political power through an influx of foreign voters.
The Democrats’ assumption that last year’s legal immigrants would always back future immigrants appears overly simplistic. In reality, many of today’s legal immigrants face considerable economic and civic challenges due to the next wave of immigration.
These polling results could create strategic dilemmas for the Democrats. Reducing both legal and illegal immigration might foster more support among current legal immigrants for Democrats’ expansive spending policies. Yet, cutting back on immigration could also lead to wage increases and greater prosperity for all voters, which might deter many from supporting the Democrats’ large government spending initiatives.
Voting analyst Harry Enten explained this unexpected trend.
“In 2020, Democrats enjoyed a 32-point advantage among legal immigrant voters. Fast forward to 2024/2025, and there’s been a striking 40-point shift toward the right. Currently, Republicans hold an 8-point lead among immigrant voters.” He added that the very group of voters becoming more hardline on immigration includes the immigrants who are registered to vote.
In 2024, Trump secured 47% of the legal immigrant vote, a gain from 36% in 2016.
In 2020, most legal immigrants felt sympathy toward undocumented immigrants. However, by the end of Biden’s term, that sympathy had waned significantly, according to Enten.
He remarked, “Legal immigrant voters increasingly see themselves as distinct from those who are here illegally. It’s likely they will continue to grow more favorable toward stricter immigration policies.”
Much of this shift can be tied to Biden’s immigration advocates, such as Alejandro Mayorkas, who oversees border and immigration policies. He has acknowledged the presence of about 10 million undocumented immigrants crossing the southern border, alongside 3 million legal immigrants arriving through airports and around the same number of temporary workers filling various roles.
The direction of Mayorkas’ immigration policies seems aimed at supporting employers and investors, but has also faced criticism for keeping wages stagnant while benefiting certain sectors.
Some progressives have sought to leverage migration to gain power, by influencing the demographic landscape to favor Democratic interests. Two authors from the Progressive Policy Institute noted this trend as they discussed the historical context of Democratic strategies.
“Many Democrats assumed that ongoing demographic changes would favor them in the long run, anticipating that an influx of immigrants would reinforce their support base among people of color, including African Americans and Native Americans.”
To counter these demographic shifts, Progressives have aligned with business interests, even moving into traditional union spaces to rally support among immigrants.
On the other hand, the public has expressed discontent with the adverse effects brought about by policies favoring population exchanges, regardless of positive media portrayals.
Since January, Trump has taken steps to restrict illegal immigration, which has allowed wages for average Americans to rise slowly. He is also trying to cut back on the influx of foreign white-collar workers, despite pressures from some donors for more imports in that sector.
Public sentiment appears to be increasingly in favor of Trump’s immigration reforms. For example, a significant 59% supported a crackdown on certain protests in Los Angeles, with a June 10 poll indicating that 39% were opposed to ongoing immigration policies.
Some observers, including those from Breitbart, have pointed out how certain demographic shifts have been facilitated to serve the Democrats, hoping to create a more favorable environment for their political aspirations.
