Legislature approves bill allowing Mets owner Steve Cohen’s casino at Citi Field

Casino Plans Near Citi Field Advance

Albany – The state legislature has taken a significant step.

On Tuesday, lawmakers approved measures that enable billionaire Mets owner Steve Cohen to pursue a casino project next to Citi Field in Queens. The 138-7 vote signals a renewed momentum for Cohen’s previously stalled casino ambitions in Albany.

The bill’s sponsor highlighted the potential benefits, stating, “This is an opportunity to bring true investment into the local economy and has a bold vision to turn 50 acres of asphalt into a genuine profitable entity.” They emphasized the aim of giving back to residents who contribute more than they receive.

The proposed site is currently designated as Parklands, which means state approval is necessary before the local city can greenlight the project.

However, the real challenge lies in the state Senate. Senator Jessica Ramos (D-Queens), who oversees much of the designated casino land, has previously used her position to block local initiatives. Earlier this year, Senator John Liu (D-Queens), representing part of the proposed site, introduced legislation that is now progressing through committees, with hopes for a Senate vote.

Ramos admits it may be difficult to counter Cohen’s substantial lobbying efforts, which have influenced the casino proposal’s trajectory.

Meanwhile, the competitive landscape is shifting. Just last month, Las Vegas Sands pulled a $4 billion casino bid near Nassau Coliseum. In a related move, the Solobiev Group, partnering with Mohegan to develop a casino adjacent to Freedom Plaza in Manhattan, has announced plans to offer stock options to local residents, securing up to 12% for New York City residents.
