Lena Dunham has announced her collaboration with Planned Parenthood to develop an abortion-themed storyline for her Netflix series, excessively.

While presenting herself as a pro-choice feminist, Dunham’s previous HBO series, girls, portrayed a more conservative view regarding a character’s decision to carry an unplanned pregnancy to term. In contrast, her latest show, excessively, takes a different approach.

“It felt right for the narrative. It felt honest. I wanted to discuss this in a way that was emotional and authentic, but also not create an atmosphere of regret or shame,” she mentioned.

“After Roe v. Wade was overturned, it became really significant to me,” Dunham continued. “Seeing the reactions from the UK, and noting how similar issues are manifesting over there, it’s pretty alarming.”

Dunham shared her observations of “people’s fear and pain” surrounding post-Roe restrictions. She noted that her partnership with Planned Parenthood aims to portray abortion stories free from shame.

“She isn’t depicted as struggling with the choice,” Dunham said. “Abortion is about prioritizing oneself and determining one’s own future.”

Lena Dunham recently drew attention for her remarks supporting transgender rights during a protest on “Trans Day of Visibility.” She expressed, “When my brother came out as transgender, I realized I never really had a sister; they became an incredibly wise, funny, resilient brother.”

“The journey of my sibling’s transition has been a remarkable experience for our family,” she reflected. “We’ve shared laughter, tears, and growth together.”
