Lena Dunham Shares That Her Father Didn't Want to Be Seen Voting with Her for Obama

Lena Dunham Reflects on Voting Experience with Her Father

Lena Dunham shared an interesting memory regarding her father’s reluctance to be seen voting with her during the 2012 election, when she was a vocal supporter of Barack Obama. This revelation came during her appearance on “The Interview” podcast, where she promoted her new memoir, “Famesick.” Dunham recounted how her rising fame from the series “Girls” intertwined with her political activism, ultimately impacting her personal life.

She remembered the election year vividly, saying, “I was all in for Obama,” but her father was hesitant. “I don’t know if I wanna go vote with Lena Dunham,” she recalled him saying. It struck her as odd—her father, whom she considers a close friend, felt that their joint presence at the polls would create a stir.

“He basically suggested I should just go alone,” she shared, acknowledging the irony. This moment of hesitation made her realize that the attention from her television role had changed how some people, including even her family, perceived her. It was only a few months after “Girls” premiered, yet she sensed that something significant was shifting in her personal world.

In her discussion, Dunham also touched upon how the negative sentiments towards her in Hollywood might stem from personal perceptions of her character. “I know this sounds like an excuse,” she admitted, “but I’ve been annoying since I was a kid.” It’s a humorous yet slightly revealing remark about her self-awareness and how she believes people have often viewed her. It seems there has always been a mix of admiration and annoyance in her journey.
