Lenny Wilkens, Basketball Legend, Passes Away at 88

Lenny Wilkens, who hailed from Brooklyn and was celebrated in the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach, passed away on Sunday at the age of 88.

Wilkens had a notable playing career that spanned 15 seasons. He was drafted sixth overall in 1960 after playing at Providence College.

During his playing days, he was a nine-time All-Star, showcasing his talent with the St. Louis Hawks, Seattle SuperSonics, and Cleveland Cavaliers.

After retiring as a player at the end of the 1974-75 season with Portland, he had already begun his coaching journey. He served as a player-coach for both Seattle and Portland before stepping into a full-time coaching role in 1975-76.

Wilkens took the reins of the Sonics and remarkably led them to their first and only NBA championship in 1979, which was a significant achievement for the franchise.

His coaching career extended beyond Seattle to include stints in Cleveland, Atlanta, and Toronto. Eventually, he returned to his roots, coaching the Knicks for parts of two seasons starting in 2004.

In 2004, Wilkens took over the Knicks, leading them to the postseason before stepping down after a slow start in the following year.

At the time of his retirement, Wilkens had achieved an impressive milestone—1,332 wins, the most ever for a head coach, though he has since been surpassed by Don Nelson and Gregg Popovich. He remains one of only five individuals honored in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach.

Additionally, he made his mark on the international stage, guiding the U.S. team to a gold medal at the 1996 Olympics.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver remarked in a statement that Wilkens embodied the essence of the league, serving as a Hall of Fame player, an esteemed coach, and a respected representative of the game. He noted that four years prior, Wilkens received the distinguished honor of being named one of the 75 greatest players and one of the 15 greatest coaches in NBA history.
