Leody Taveras of the Orioles attempts to catch a squirrel at Comerica Park

Rogue Squirrel Causes Havoc During MLB Game

During the game on Monday night between the Baltimore Orioles and the Detroit Tigers, a squirrel caused quite a stir on the field, much to the frustration of MLB grounds staff and outfielders alike.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, amidst the Orioles’ 8-5 victory, this little troublemaker became a distraction, darting up and down the warning track. The gameplay actually continued for an entire inning as the squirrel made itself at home in the stadium. At one point, it even found itself hanging out near a pigeon, reinforcing an unexpected animal kingdom vibe.

Well, the drama didn’t stop there. As the seventh inning kicked off, the squirrel took a trip over the infield, though the game trudged on. The real commotion started when grounds staff showed up to deal with the critter. As it made its way toward the right-field corner, a security guard opened the gate, but the squirrel didn’t quite get the memo. About 15 grounds staff members and Orioles outfielder Leody Taveras tried their best to catch the little guy, but it turned out to be a tricky task.

At one point, a member of the grounds crew got so flustered by the squirrel’s evasive maneuvers that he fell to his knees. Taveras attempted to catch the squirrel with his glove, but it made a daring escape, leaping out and showing off some impressive agility.

You know, the squirrel’s antics somehow felt like a scene from a comedy. It dashed around, dodging towels thrown by the crew and evaded capture time and again. Finally, after a series of near captures, it was managed to be trapped under a towel, much to the crowd’s cheers—and the grounds staff’s relief.

Play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti provided some lively commentary, adding to the hilarity of the moment: “The squirrel chase is on! It’s free again!” The excitement only amplified as the crowd watched the unfolding chaos.

Once the squirrel was finally caught, home plate umpire Bill Miller thanked the grounds crew for their efforts, prompting applause from the eager fans. Orioles manager Craig Albanaz aptly summed up the unexpected entertainment by calling it an extraordinary situation. “At one point, I thought he was going to get into the batter’s box!” he quipped, mentioning how even the umpire got involved.

The Orioles will certainly hope for a quieter game when they face the Tigers again on Tuesday night, without any squirrel-related interruptions.
