There comes a point when renovation becomes rebuilding and rebuilding becomes rebuilding. And finally, all you need is the finishing touches. Then you will have a team moving forward together.
In a good direction.
Even worse.
At times, it’s important to remember how fundamentally hopeless things seemed around the Knicks on the afternoon of March 2, 2020. And we’re talking about how it’s not scary to move the camera back a little bit and get a full wide-angle shot of what we’re seeing.
That night, the Knicks defeated the Rockets at Madison Square Garden, improving their season record to an astonishing 19 wins and 41 losses. However, Leon Rose had been appointed team president earlier that day. As has become his custom since that day, Rose avoided the welcoming press conference, choosing instead to write an open letter to Knicks fans.
These are the words of the money shot. In return, I promise you that I will be honest and forthright. We will develop meaningful plans to accelerate short-term growth and ensure long-term success. ”
Two nights later, the Jazz visited the Gardens, Rudy Gobert blew on Donovan Mitchell, and the first firestorm that would soon follow broke out. A week later, the season ended. When the Knicks restarted a few months later, they were in such dire shape that they weren’t even invited to the bubble in Florida.
it is How bad was the situation?
The hill facing Rose was that steep. And from the jump, he pretty much lived up to his initial promise. He stopped a brutal coaching hiring merry-go-round by handing the job to Tom Thibodeau. He has primarily filled the roster with Thibs-friendly players (one notable exception is Evan Fournier, who returned to the Garden as a Piston on Monday night).
Success was immediate, with an impressive 41-31 record in 2021. In 2022, there was the issue of a 37-45 disaster. Last spring, they made a breakthrough by winning the playoff series for the second time since 2000. There have also been a number of smarter draft choices and smarter contract decisions. That brings us to the current situation, a Knicks team that theoretically (and in good health) could be one of the most intriguing teams in the NBA this spring.
Renovation has been completed. The same goes for reconstruction. Most of the reconstructions were successful. And now the Knicks are waiting for Rose’s final inspiration. That’s why it’s so important to take good care of yourself this spring. Not only does the Knicks want to play against the beast in the East, but he also wants to know exactly where they stand when compared to other notable teams in the East. Support your team in terms of what it takes to fully close that gap.
Monday’s game against Detroit was a reminder of all the small choices and difficult decisions Rose has had to make. Quentin Grimes is also currently with the Pistons, and he, along with RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, Obi Toppin and Deuce McBride, are among the young players Rose has banked on to build a solid foundation early in his tenure here. He was one of a group of players.
McBride is the only one left in that group. That’s because Rose used other names to help bring in better-fit talent and increase roster flexibility. This is a reminder that draft picks as assets are often much more valuable as chips than as actual players.
In some ways, it seems impossible that four years have passed since Rose’s arrival. Because he was able to take his heritage and acquisitions and quickly turn them into something competitive. Some of the strokes were big and bold. Jalen Brunson is clearly his masterpiece. Others were less clear at this point. And there may still be one move that makes all the others feel like a precursor.
Rose said on the day he arrived that we were looking at a “pivotal period in Knicks history,” and he was right, and it continues to be. Even though the foundations are already in place, there is still much to accomplish.
