Leona Maguire overcomes tick bite issues to complete major tournament on the LPGA Tour

Irish golfer Leona Maguire took the lead at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship last weekend, though she mentioned feeling uncomfortable due to a tick bite.

She explained that she was dealing with the effects of a tick bite she received at Erin Hills Golf Course during the Women’s Open and was on doxycycline to manage the situation. Reporters noted her hands appeared swollen during the championship.

Maguire humorously referred to the sore as looking like “pepperoni,” stating it made her skin feel delicate, almost like “tissue paper.”

Unfortunately, the heat in Texas didn’t help her performance. She finished the first round four strokes behind the leader, Jeeno Thitikul, and struggled to maintain her pace. She ultimately shot a 76 in the final round, placing her in a tie for 19th with players like Nelly Korda and Miranda Wang. The tournament was won by Minji Lee.

She expressed her gratitude to KPMG for their commitment to women’s golf and praised the hospitality provided during the event, sharing her thoughts on Instagram. According to Maguire, the windy conditions posed a challenge, stating, “The winds didn’t wander, but they never returned to the end of business on a Sunday afternoon.”

Maguire has been a part of the LPGA tour since 2020. This season, she’s participated in 14 tournaments and made the cut in 10 of them, earning approximately $315,000 so far.
