Leonardo DiCaprio shares the unexpected name that Hollywood agents suggested he adopt.

Leonardo DiCaprio Discusses His Early Career

In a recent chat on the “New Heights” podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce, Leonardo DiCaprio opened up about his beginnings in acting. The 50-year-old actor reflected on his experiences as a child performer and shared how his father played a significant role in his decisions.

DiCaprio recalled the moment he got an agent who suggested a name change, saying, “Your name is too ethnic.” This caught him off guard. “What does it mean? It’s Leonardo DiCaprio,” he said, only to hear the suggestion of “Lenny Williams” as a new name.

He humorously remembered his confusion: “What is Rennie?” When his father caught wind of the proposed change, his response was firm, “On my corpse.”

Looking back, DiCaprio regards his role in “This Boy’s Life,” alongside a young Robert De Niro, as a pivotal moment in his career. He had long aspired to be a young actor and felt a thrill when he realized that acting could actually be his job. He mentioned that he started imitating friends of his parents at just four years old.

After years in the industry, DiCaprio shared that he intends to take a step back from Hollywood, becoming more selective with the roles he takes on. “I’m a little slow,” he admitted, mentioning he is “slowing down a bit.” However, he can’t seem to pass up the chance to work with director Paul Thomas Anderson in his upcoming comedy, “Announcement Battle.”

He expressed that it felt like the right time to take this step, noting how he has been a fan of Anderson’s work since seeing “Boogie Nights.” “His films resonate with me,” he said. “They feel like conversations with friends.”

Concerning awards, DiCaprio stated, “They can come and go. Box office success fluctuates, but the art we discuss and reflect on is what we aim for as actors. Paul truly represents our generation.”

This upcoming film marks the first collaboration between DiCaprio and Anderson, a partnership DiCaprio had long hoped for after missing out on previous opportunities to work together.

In a previous interview with Esquire, he mentioned, “One of my biggest regrets is not having participated in ‘Boogie Nights.’ It struck me as a remarkable film from my generation.” This reflection indicates not just his admiration for the film but perhaps his aspirations for meaningful artistic collaborations in the future.
