Leonie Fibich Returns to Liberty’s Lineup
Brianna Stewart clasped her hands and looked skyward, maybe in gratitude for answered prayers. Among the most eager for Leonie Fibich’s return to the Liberty’s lineup is Stewart herself, who carries the weight of keeping the team steady after a rough season start.
“Leo is a top defender,” she noted before the Liberty’s 84-74 win against the Phoenix Mercury at Barclays Center. “Her chemistry with the team is crucial. I mean, if she and I can sync up defensively, we add so much more length and awareness to the court.”
This season, the Liberty have struggled to establish their defensive identity. They came into the game averaging 86.9 points per game but also boasted a defensive rating of 106.5, placing them eighth in the league. A major concern has been their perimeter defense, as they allow 29.7 three-point attempts per game—the highest in the league.
After witnessing his team drop three straight games, Fibich was excited to get back to work on Wednesday. “Whatever the team needs,” she stated. “If it requires ball pressure, then I’m here to provide that, whatever my coach or the team needs from me.”
Despite any hint of jet lag, Fibich made an immediate impact on both ends of the court, particularly evident during a spectacular 23-0 scoring streak in the third quarter.
Fibich put up nine points on 3-of-4 shooting along with two steals during her 32 minutes on the court. Yet, those numbers barely scratch the surface of her overall influence, especially defensively.
“She lived up to expectations,” manager Chris DeMarco remarked about Fibich. “She’s consistent, handles the ball well defensively, and can hit important three-pointers. It’s clear she understands the game. She’s a wonderful addition, even if she’s still adapting.”
Fibich’s skill set aligns perfectly with the style of play DeMarco aims to implement. She can make critical three-pointers, like the one she hit at the game’s outset, and thrives in the space created in the offense.
Although her time with the team has been brief, it’s evident that Fibich has picked up on the spacing concepts quickly. “It’s liberating,” she commented on the team’s offensive flow. “Everyone gets the chance to display their skills and talents.”
