LeSean McCoy Weighs in on Eagles’ Offensive Struggles
Former Eagles running back LeSean McCoy has come forward with some insights regarding the team’s offensive challenges this season.
During a recent appearance on the “Speakeasy” podcast, following Philadelphia’s narrow 23-19 defeat to the 49ers in the NFC Wild Card Game, McCoy indicated that officials within the Eagles organization believe that quarterback Jalen Hurts might be hindering their offensive capabilities.
“I want you to be special and make plays,” McCoy stated regarding Hurts. “I’ve done some digging—I’m not looking to throw you under the bus, but I know people, and the issue is we can’t explore different formations or movements because I’ve heard he struggles with that.”
He elaborated on the challenges faced by Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown in establishing a connection with Hurts.
“When I see players like Justin Jefferson or Jamar Chase, their teams are trying to get the ball to their top receivers… but they aren’t doing that with AJ Brown,” McCoy noted.
“I think the lack of targets is tied to the quarterback situation,” he added.
“I keep asking around—coaches and players know I’m in Philadelphia—and the consistent response is, ‘Oh, they don’t do that.’
“Then when I press further, they say, ‘Well, it doesn’t fit our offense.'”
McCoy expressed that he doubts Hurts prefers these plays, believing he wants a more straightforward approach. “Given the talent on the team, I feel like we should be doing more,” he remarked.
He also mentioned that it’s understandable for Brown to seek opportunities elsewhere due to his lack of touches as a top receiver.
This ongoing issue between Hurts and Brown has been apparent since last season, especially when Brown shared his frustration over the offense.
After the loss, Brown opted not to address the media.
Hurts, who was named Super Bowl MVP just a year ago, struggled to direct the Eagles’ offense against a tough 49ers defense. They recorded four drops on crucial third downs, the highest in any playoff game since 2006, according to ESPN.
Additionally, the Eagles were implementing a new offensive strategy this season, now under offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo after Kellen Moore departed for a head coaching role in New Orleans.
