Declining Confidence in GOP’s Ability to Protect and Prosper
Americans generally think the Republican Party does a better job at keeping the country safe and prosperous, but it seems fewer people feel this way compared to last year, according to a recent Gallup poll released on Tuesday.
The survey revealed that 48% of respondents believe Republicans can better protect the country, while 41% favor Democrats for this role. Interestingly, the Republican edge has slipped from 57% in previous years to 54% in 2024.
Meanwhile, fewer individuals now think the GOP is more likely to keep the economy flourishing. The last Gallup survey from September 2024 showed that 50% of people thought Republicans were better at ensuring prosperity. Fast forward a year, and that number declined to 43%, whereas 47% feel Democrats are performing better in this area.
When asked about which party is equipped to tackle the country’s pressing issues, Democrats received 40% support, slightly ahead of Republicans at 38%, just a 2-point difference. This is a stark contrast to the Republican leads of 3-11 points seen during Biden’s presidency.
In terms of overall favorability, both parties are not performing well, with 40% liking Republicans and 37% favoring Democrats.
“This year, Republicans have lost ground on important issues such as prosperity and national security, while Democrats haven’t experienced equivalent gains,” noted the pollster. “Broadly speaking, Americans seem unhappy with both major parties, as less than half of the population has a favorable view of either.”
The Gallup poll also indicated notable unpopularity for both parties, as well as for President Trump. In a separate poll by Reuters/Ipsos, 50% of respondents held Congressional Republicans responsible for the government shutdown, while 47% blamed Democrats. Interestingly, Trump’s approval rating was 42%, marking a slight increase from 40% the previous month.
The Gallup poll was conducted between September 2 and 16, surveying 1,000 individuals, with a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
