Let ’em eat steak! NYC restaurants serve up cheaper cuts to lure inflation-battered red meat fans

Record-high steak prices have led savvy Big Apple restaurateurs to offer cheaper options like steak frites to lure cash-conscious diners still looking for lean meat dishes. A survey of side dishes revealed that they are forced to do so.

The popular French dish, made with cheaper steaks like hanger and top sirloin, is appearing alongside more expensive menu items at restaurants run by top chefs on both sides of the East River.

At Park Ave Kitchen by David Burke, the chef serves $24 steak frites featuring a “petit filet mignon” served with endless fries as part of the happy hour menu from 4pm to 7pm daily. I am. That's a huge savings over the restaurant's $160. Price is for two 40-ounce tomahawk steaks.

The trend comes as the price of sirloin steak has soared from $6.77 a decade ago to $11.79 per pound, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. At the same time, U.S. cattle inventories are at their lowest since 1951.

Experts say the price hike is being fueled by soaring grain prices, partly due to drought and the war in Ukraine, and rising interest rates, which increase livestock costs.

Meanwhile, potato prices are relatively low, thanks to an oversupply of spuds caused by farmers overplanting last year.
