Scott Pelley’s Departure from CBS News: A Mixed Bag of Reactions

Scott Pelley, after nearly 40 years with CBS News and a significant tenure on 60 Minutes, has left quite an impression—and not the good kind. The changes at CBS News, led by Bari Weiss, seem to have hit him hard. It’s almost as if he couldn’t cope with the shifting landscape of the newsroom and decided to lash out before his exit. At a staff meeting, he expressed anger towards Weiss, deeming her unfit for the position, which ended with his dismissal. It’s almost comical how he’s now positioned himself as a martyr following his firing.

It’s a peculiar situation for those of us who critique mainstream media; he inadvertently highlights why there’s so much disdain for it in the first place. So, what does someone like Pelley do right after being let go? Well, picture this: cruising on a luxury yacht, seemingly unaffected by his previous work woes. Yeah, that’s right, he seems to be in touch with real everyday America now.

But the real spectacle? His interview over the weekend. It was an exercise in arrogance, with a level of entitlement that was almost staggering. If you want to understand how broken legacy media is, you really should read it. It’s astonishing that someone with his mindset ever made it through the doors, let alone get any accolades.

For instance, during the interview, Pelley claimed there’s no bias in 60 Minutes, or at least not in any perceivable way. When Weiss pushed back, asking for evidence, he just seemed to scoff at the idea. He went on to admit that he bypassed Weiss’ guidance and aired a story containing disputed claims without any acknowledgement. How does that happen? It raises eyebrows.

There was a specific incident where Weiss suggested he refer to an ICE protester’s actions in a particular way, and instead of complying, he just asserted his own version. He later stated, rather boldly, that he simply decided to ignore her. It’s a rather baffling approach when one considers that news accuracy should come first.

If I were in a position like his and disregarded my boss’s instructions in such a blatant way, I’d expect a swift kick to the curb, and rightly so. Yet, here he is.

In a particularly grandiose moment, he mentioned having experience in combat and questioned whether any president could boast the same. While it’s noteworthy, it still feels out of place in a conversation about a fired newscaster.

He wrapped up his remarks by lamenting the supposed incompetence of CBS management and alluding to a political bias he claims never existed before. The irony is palpable. This whole episode paints him as a classic narcissist, spinning his narrative to be the unsuspecting hero in a flawed industry.

In essence, if one were to script a character to portray the failings of corporate media, they couldn’t do much better than Pelley. It’s curious. I suspect he may fade from the spotlight, just like others who found themselves ousted, leaving behind a legacy of contradiction and drama.
