Lewis Hamilton’s Remarkable Move to Ferrari Sparks New Hopes

When Lewis Hamilton made the surprising announcement regarding his switch to Ferrari for the 2025 season, it felt almost scripted, like something out of a movie. A remarkable figure in racing, he transitioned from the team that brought him early success to one of the sport’s most iconic teams. As soon as he joined Ferrari, the pairing seemed destined for greatness.

Though, sometimes, destiny has a way of making you wait.

Hamilton’s first season with Ferrari was, well, far from smooth. The Hungarian Grand Prix, which occurred just before the summer break, was particularly disappointing and led to chatter about his potential retirement. Hamilton himself added fuel to the fire by expressing a “hopeful” desire to return after the summer hiatus.

“When you have feelings, you have feelings. There’s been a lot of rough stuff happening behind the scenes,” Hamilton shared following the race. After the Hungarian Grand Prix, he added, “I’m just glad it’s over, and I can’t wait to head home.”

He eventually returned to racing but finished 6th in the Drivers’ Championship standings—his second consecutive year out of the top three, feeling like a distant memory from when he last won the championship in 2020.

Then came his victory at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, igniting dreams of an eighth title that would position him alongside Michael Schumacher, who dominated with seven titles. Yet it wasn’t just about the win; it was how Hamilton clinched it in the iconic red Ferrari.

Some might argue that the virtual safety car helped him, but from early in the race, Hamilton was proving he had the pace to challenge his former teammate George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. While Mercedes boasted a solid start to the season with their new car, Ferrari’s upgrades were narrowing the gap. Without the safety car late in the race, Hamilton could have easily finished stronger based purely on his speed.

His performance on medium tires during the race was a stunning display, reminiscent of Hamilton’s prime. After his pit stop on lap 27, he was about 24 seconds behind Russell.

As he has done so many times before, Hamilton turned up the heat. By lap 30, he had reduced the gap to 18 seconds; by lap 34, it was down to 10 seconds.

Then, by lap 35, the distance shrank to under 8 seconds, setting the stage for an intense finish.

Mercedes called Russell in for a pit stop on lap 36, which was the fastest of the day. However, even with a total stop of 21.677 seconds, Hamilton managed to take the lead. This maneuver, paired with Alonso’s issues, set the stage for a final pit stop that allowed Hamilton to re-emerge on track ahead of Russell and ultimately pull away as the race wound down.

When Hamilton returned post-stop, he was just 2.9 seconds ahead. By lap 60, he had extended the gap to over 15 seconds.

In his post-race remarks, Hamilton referred to his speech as “the longest TV pen” he’d ever had, reflecting on the moments of doubt and how his faith in both Ferrari and himself remained unwavering.

“How do you find the right words to express emotions that are beyond your wildest dreams?” he pondered in an interview.

“I truly believed in my decision to join Ferrari and what we could achieve together, despite the ups and downs throughout the year,” Hamilton noted.

He also acknowledged the support from his family, friends, and fans during tough times.

“I feel that my fans really helped me last year, along with my family and friends who have stood by me,” he expressed. “Now, with a new season and many changes underway, it’s incredible to be in this position. I’m grateful and proud of my team; they’re passionate and humble.”

Hamilton addressed critiques regarding his previous performance, admitting that it’s natural for negative comments to get under his skin at times.

“I’m only human,” he remarked. “There are moments where it gets to me. But I’ve relied on my family and friends, the real people in my life who never doubted me.”

Reflecting on his training, he shared it felt more intense than ever, particularly after dealing with injuries last year.

“You mustn’t second-guess yourself. Believing in yourself is crucial, and that mentality has made a difference for me. It feels amazing to be here on the podium. I might just go to bed in this red top,” he added with a smile.

Now, Hamilton finds himself back on top of the podium, and he’s also back in title contention. His recent victory, along with Kimi Antonelli’s late race retirement, has put him within 41 points in the Drivers’ Championship standings.

Maybe, just maybe, Hamilton is really feeling that he can clinch an eighth title.

“Honestly, with how this year started, I’m not focused on that just yet,” he said. “Of course, we aim to win, but we’re also aware it’ll take time. Mercedes has had a strong start this year, and while we’re aware of our challenges, we’re in it for the long haul.”

He concluded, “We just have to keep enhancing our performance and enjoy this journey.”

This recent victory propels Hamilton back into the title race, and it seems he’s rediscovered his competitive edge, reminding everyone of the formidable driver he has always been.
