Boy George Critiques LGBTQ+ Identity Politics
Pop icon Boy George has shared his thoughts on the LGBTQ+ identity politics, expressing that he feels it hasn’t adequately supported the community. In a recent interview, he voiced his discontent with gay political culture, stating, “I don’t think it’s useful to anyone,” as reported by a British newspaper.
He emphasized that individuals within the community are diverse and shouldn’t be pigeonholed. “We’re not a monolith. This is what black people are, this is what Jews, this is what trans people are—no!” he asserted.
George elaborated, saying, “You start from the wrong perspective because no one is the same as everyone else, and everyone is diverse.” He pointed out that traits like eye color or body shape are not chosen, underlining the uniqueness of each person.
He also mentioned being indifferent to who identifies as gay, pondering if people’s sexual orientations matter unless one is involved with them. “I said in an interview when I was 17, unless you have sex with them, do you really care about someone’s sexuality?”
Despite this, he criticized the intense focus on transgender issues, lamenting the “anger” prevalent in online discussions. “Trans people are new people who hate,” he remarked, questioning how many trans individuals anyone meets in their daily life. He contrasted the online world’s negativity with real-life interactions, suggesting they often feel worlds apart.
The openly gay singer, known for “Karma Chameleon,” has had his share of controversy within the LGBTQ+ community; notably, he faced backlash in 2020 for his comment advising people to “leave your pronoun at the door.”
Furthermore, he has wavered in his support for the trans community, especially as discussions around figures like JK Rowling, who faces scrutiny for her views on women’s spaces in relation to transgender issues, have gained traction.
Boy George engaged with fans defending trans support from actor Pedro Pascal, asserting, “If @JK_Rowling doesn’t agree that he hates women, then stop this nonsense. She hates men. This is the truth. She can’t distinguish between ‘trans’ women and biological men.”
