Liam McNeeley from UConn picked at No. 29 in the NBA Draft

Liam McNeely’s NBA Dream Realized

Liam McNeely felt a surge of excitement as he was drafted alongside his friends and former high school teammates—Cooper Flag, Derrick Queen, and Asa Newell. However, as the clock ticked past 11 PM, he started to wonder if his name would be called at all.

Then, at last, the moment arrived.

He was selected as the 29th pick in the first round of the NBA Draft, landing with the Suns, although the pick was initially held by the Hornets.

“I’ve dreamed about this since I was five,” McNeely expressed shortly after walking down the center stage at Barclays and greeting NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “This is everything I’ve ever wanted. But now, the real work starts. I just got emotional thinking about all the people who’ve supported me on this journey.”

He shared how much sacrifice this dream has required—time spent away from friends and family—yet, it’s all been worth it to him, as basketball is his true passion.

During his time at UCONN, McNeely had a standout season, averaging 14.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. He played a crucial role in helping the Huskies continue their winning streak in the NCAA Tournament.

McNeely became the fifth player from Connecticut to be selected in the first round over the last five years.

Despite some concerns about his defensive skills and a relatively low 3-point shooting percentage of 31.7, McNeely didn’t allow that to cloud his mood after being drafted. Instead, he felt a sense of relief.

“There’s really no reason to be upset,” he stated. “I’m here to play in the NBA.”

McNeely was one of only two Big East players drafted in the first round, with Thomas Solver from Georgetown joining him.

Looking ahead, he mentioned excitement about facing off against his former Montverde Academy (Florida) teammates—Flag, Queen, and Newell. “It’s just incredible to think I’ll be playing against them,” he remarked.
