Alex Murdaugh’s mother, Elizabeth “Libby” Murdaugh, who played a key role in her son’s adamant denial of killing his wife and son, has died.
Libby Murdaugh was receiving hospice care when she died Tuesday, according to Peoples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton County. She was a librarian and teacher in the low country of South Carolina.
Libby Murdaugh had been in poor health for many years due to dementia. Her son had just visited her in June 2021, returned to her home about 11 miles away, and found Maggie and Paul Murdaugh shot to death outside, according to a 911 call.

But a video taken by the son minutes before his and his mother’s cellphones were never used again showed Alex Murdaugh was with them, and prosecutors believe Murdaugh killed them and are trying to organize the evidence. When he returned, he convinced the jury that he had enough time to go to his mother’s house.
Libby Murdaugh was unable to testify at her son’s trial last year because of her health. Alex Murdaugh was convicted of two counts of murder and is serving two life sentences.
Libby Murdaugh was married to former attorney Randolph Murdaugh III for 60 years. The elected prosecutor, along with her father and grandfather, oversaw criminal cases in Hampton County and the surrounding area for nearly 90 years.
On the night of the murder, Randolph Murdaugh III was in the hospital. He died three days later.
