Liberals Are Upset After Gavin Newsom Takes a Rare Rational Action

California’s Governor Gavin Newsom seems to be trying, albeit somewhat half-heartedly, to distance himself from the more extreme viewpoints on the left. This has left some Californians feeling let down, especially considering their stories and concerns have ended up in the political arena, often involving figures like former President Donald Trump.

According to the New York Times, many families with transgender minors in California are frustrated not just with Trump’s administration, but also with Newsom himself.

Family members and advocates for transgender rights have expressed feelings of betrayal. The article cites opinions suggesting that healthcare administrators are scapegoating transgender children.

Recently, two major medical centers in California, known for offering “gender-affirming” treatments to children, have shut their doors.

It’s perhaps not surprising that those advocating for transgender children would protest against hurdles to their transition. After all, they are a segment of the far-left. But it seems like there’s little room for opposing views.

The comments section of the NYT often leans liberal, with individuals asserting that children shouldn’t undergo hormone treatments or surgeries based on gender identity issues. One popular comment, even from someone who has never supported Trump, noted that he was right on this specific topic.

The NYT doesn’t often provide strong reasons to give Newsom some credit, except for his tentative display of common sense earlier this year. Newsom, during a conversation with conservative speaker Charlie Kirk, discussed the fairness concerning male athletes competing in women’s sports.

He mentioned that, “It’s a matter of fairness,” but nevertheless, California is currently embroiled in a lawsuit from the Justice Department for alleged violations of Title IX.

While this statement doesn’t necessarily paint Newsom as a Republican, the DOJ has indeed taken action against California, particularly regarding male athletes participating in female sports leagues.

Newsom appears to be trying to navigate the contentious issue of gender-affirming care for minors but has faced criticism for not doing enough to defend transgender individuals in the state.

Interestingly, the NYT also holds the Trump administration accountable for much of this turmoil.

The focus has shifted to the two medical centers that have significantly reduced gender-related treatments for young transgender people under pressure from Trump’s policies.

The first of these was Stanford Medicine, which had previously provided surgical procedures for patients under 19. Their decision to stop such treatments was attributed to a careful review of new federal mandates and consultations with healthcare leaders.

The second center mentioned is the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, known for housing one of the largest clinics for transgender youth in the country. This clinic closed recently, and its approach to care had drawn both support and criticism.

There is also ongoing litigation involving one of the former patients of the clinic who claims she was rushed into transitioning without adequate assessments. This raised concerns about medical practices in treating minors.

Despite the closure, there are assertions that the necessary steps in gender-affirming care for minors typically start with psychotherapy, followed by hormone treatments, and rarely involve surgery.

The public discourse is certainly heated, with conflicting perspectives on the suitability of treatments for youth experiencing gender dysphoria.

While some voices echo caution against unnecessary surgical interventions for minors, there’s an undeniable push from the former administration towards banning such procedures entirely.

The situation continues to evoke strong feelings on both sides of the debate, with medical malpractice insurance providers now warning doctors about potential liabilities linked to transgender care.

In light of everything, it seems we might be nearing an endpoint to this challenging chapter. Perhaps Newsom should have considered more carefully where he stands.
