Katherine Heigl Defends Attendance at Mar-a-Lago Event
Actress Katherine Heigl responded strongly to online backlash after attending a fundraising event at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida.
Heigl made her first appearance on the red carpet in two years for the Wine, Women’s and Shoes fundraiser. However, her presence drew immediate criticism, particularly from liberal commentators.
One notable comment read, “Fuck her and anyone who joins Magarago for any reason.” The event was co-chaired by Lara Trump, which led to accusations against Heigl of endorsing Trump’s presidency.
Progressive activist Jonathan Cohn remarked, “Let me tell you this: 20 years ago, those of you who harbored an unusually intense, subconscious hatred of Katherine Heigl were right.” Another user chimed in, calling her “a piece of shit.”
Critics on social media expressed their discontent. One user stated, “If you’re not appalled by Trump the pedo, you’re complicit. Don’t hide behind the dog,” while another criticized her choice to support the event, saying, “Supporting Nazis. There are many organizations that are not run by white supremacists. It’s a choice.”
In response to the harsh comments, Heigl issued a statement to Variety magazine. She emphasized, “Animals don’t vote. The only room they don’t like is the euthanasia room at the shelter. They are completely at our command and have no voice of their own.”
Heigl further underscored her passion for animal advocacy, saying, “Anyone who knows me knows that saving animals is one of my greatest passions. My mother, Nancy, and I have spent years doing animal rights work through the Jason Heigl Foundation. As a society, we should all come together to protect the voiceless and the innocent. This should not be a polarizing issue.”
Additionally, event organizers reported that the fundraiser raised $5.5 million for no-kill animal shelters.
Heigl is widely recognized for her role in the hit TV series Grey’s Anatomy.
