Liberals in Canada move closer to majority, but a single vote could determine a crucial district election.

The Canadian Liberals found themselves in a majority government scenario after a judicial recount revealed they won a district by just one vote. Yet, there are complications, as some voters have claimed their votes weren’t accounted for.

This past weekend, election officials completed the recount for the Quebec area of Terrebonne.

Initially, Auguste was thought to have won following the federal election held on April 28. However, when officials verified the results on May 1, it turned out that Sinclair-Desgagné, who was first elected in 2021, was leading by 44 votes.

A judicial recount is automatically initiated under the Election Act when the difference between the winner and others is less than 0.1% of the valid votes. This recount was supervised by a judge in the provincial court of Quebec and was finalized on Saturday.

The recount ultimately returned the victory to Auguste, with the Liberals garnering 23,352 votes and Sinclair-Desgagné receiving 23,351.

Currently, these results indicate that the Liberal Party holds 170 seats in the House, just two short of the 172 needed for a majority government.

Adding to the mix is a resident of Terrebonne, Emmanuelle Bossé, who claims her vote was not included in the final tally. She stated she supported Sinclair-Desgagné but received her mailed vote back due to a postal code error.

According to Bossé, “I didn’t make a mistake; the election committee did something wrong with the envelope.” She sent her vote on April 5, but it was returned to her nearly a month later, on May 2.

Election Canada is looking into the matter and notes they are “still working to gather all the facts.”

Should new votes be accepted resulting in a tie, it may trigger a fresh election.

Additionally, there are three more recounts scheduled in the Milton, East Halton Hills South, Terranova, Peninsula, and Windsor Tecumseh constituencies. In one instance, incumbent Irek Kusmierczyk lost by 77 votes but has filed for a recount after many votes were deemed improperly rejected.

If Kusmierczyk’s challenge is successful, the Liberal Party will have 171 seats in Parliament, just shy of a majority.
