Criticism is mounting as the Trump administration plans to utilize Chicago’s Great Lakes Navy Station as a significant center for immigration enforcement in the city and across Illinois.
The Department of Homeland Security has reportedly requested naval facilities to get ready for limited logistical support—like infrastructure and other necessities—to bolster DHS operations.
The strategy is still in its preliminary stages at the facility, located roughly 35 miles north of downtown Chicago.
Tom Homan, a key figure within Trump’s administration, indicated to reporters that substantial resources would be allocated to Chicago, although he didn’t provide specifics about future initiatives.
“We’re seeing an uptick in operations across the country, and there has definitely been a noticeable increase in Chicago,” Homan stated.
“Expect to see more operations in New York, Portland, Los Angeles, Seattle, and other sanctuary cities that are resistant to cooperating with ICE,” he continued.
Chicago’s self-described “progressive” mayor, Brandon Johnson, has openly opposed the increase in ICE activities highlighted in recent discussions. He even urged Chicagoans to, in his words, “stand up” against violence directed at federal law enforcement officials.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, a Democrat, cautioned the administration against intensifying enforcement efforts in Chicago. He echoed Johnson’s sentiments, asserting, “Illinois is prepared to confront this military deployment using every peaceful method at our disposal.”
Other Democrats have also condemned the plan, including former Biden Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who criticized the concept of utilizing the Navy Station for immigration enforcement.
“When I served at Great Lakes, I never envisioned that the U.S. president would attempt to transform it into a hub for surveillance and law enforcement operations within our borders. Our military wasn’t designed to serve the whims of American dictators,” he remarked.
Immigration rights advocate Aaron Reichlin-Melnick voiced his disapproval vigorously, describing Trump as waging a “war with American cities.”
Additionally, an elderly liberal individual went so far as to suggest that Chicago gang members should shoot at members of the National Guard, who might be sent to restore order in the city.
