Liberty Faces Off Against Wings in Dallas

The Liberty are heading to Dallas to take on the Wings on Thursday, aiming to bounce back from a tough stretch on the road. They’ve dropped seven of their last ten games, bringing their season record to 13 wins and 11 losses, placing them in 8th position.

New York has shown glimpses of potential, rallying from double-digit deficits in the second half against both the Lynx and the Tempo. Despite these efforts, they fell short in both matches, marking a shaky start to their road trip.

So, can the Liberty turn things around against a Wings team that’s been on fire lately?

Dallas has claimed victory in their first two encounters with New York this season and started July with an undefeated record. If they manage to win again, they’ll hit a six-game winning streak, the longest in franchise history.

The Wings have capitalized on New York’s weaknesses, including turnovers, poor rebounding, and inconsistent performance. Liberty has really struggled offensively in both matchups against Dallas.

In the previous games, Liberty established a lead early, only to suffer through a disastrous quarter later, making it tough to recover.

For instance, on May 24, in a rough third quarter, Aggie Fudd dominated New York, finishing with a career-high 24 points. Liberty momentarily led 28-17 but succumbed to a 91-76 defeat.

In their latest game, New York found themselves in a deep hole after a shaky second quarter, trailing by 18 points at halftime.

Interestingly, Liberty did manage to exploit their inside game early in that last matchup. Jessica Shepard has been impressive this season, boasting all three triple-doubles recorded in the league for 2026. Yet, she’s lacking in shot-blocking—she’s the only regular starting forward who hasn’t registered a block this season.

But rather than sticking with what was working, New York strayed from their strategy.

After the July 6 loss, coach Chris DeMarco expressed frustration with the team’s execution. “It’s tough to run an offense when you’re constantly taking the ball out of the net,” he remarked. “We had some unforced turnovers and allowed too many offensive rebounds, especially early on.”

Rebounding from their zone defense—something Liberty often relies on—is a glaring issue for them. Dallas excels in fighting for extra possessions, averaging the sixth-most offensive boards in the league.

Moreover, the Wings are particularly dangerous during fast breaks.

The Liberty have attributed some of their struggles to a lack of consistency in their lineup, with several players missing for various reasons. Currently, they will be without Leoni Fievic due to a sore left foot and Sato Sabally, who is in concussion protocol.

At some point, though, the Liberty must reflect on their own performance.

Will they show signs of improvement on Thursday? Or will things remain unchanged?

Only time will tell.
