Liberty can assert themselves with ‘first punch’ as they begin their title defense

In recent weeks, there’s been a notable skepticism surrounding the WNBA, particularly about the chances of the defending champions, the Liberty. Only a small fraction—20%—of general managers predict they’ll clinch the title again.

Sandy Brondello, the team’s coach, has certainly noticed the chatter. “We’ve basically seen nobody pick us to win so far,” she commented, referring to a report that favored another team in the preseason 2025 predictions.

Despite being the reigning champs, the Liberty are aware of the difficulties that come with back-to-back championships. Winning consecutive titles is a hefty challenge; only three teams have achieved it in the league’s 28-year existence.

But there’s a certain confidence in their current squad, led by stars like Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones. They’re striving to solidify their legacy during this vibrant era of the WNBA.

“Everyone’s aware of our goals. We aim to win, plain and simple,” Stewart said. “But I understand that it takes time. I’m focusing on one game at a time, not rushing to think about October just yet.”

The Liberty will kick off their title defense by facing the Las Vegas Aces in their season opener on Saturday. Before the match, they’ll honor their 2024 championship at a pre-game ceremony, raising their banner and distributing rings to last season’s champions.

Post-ceremony, however, the focus quickly shifts back to the current season. “We need to make a statement early,” Natasha Cloud emphasized. “As reigning champions, we’ve got a target on our backs, and we’re eager about it.”

This year’s Liberty roster shows some familiar faces but is evolving from last season’s playoff squad. Key players like Stewart, Ionescu, Jones, and others are back, and there’s excitement surrounding the return of Rebekah Gardner after an injury and Marine Johannès, who took last season off to focus on the Olympics.

New additions like Cloud strengthen the team’s defense and add depth to the lineup, while Isabel Harrison enhances their frontcourt options.

The Liberty have had 12 practices and a couple of preseason games to prepare. They’ve been working on new strategies and fine-tuning their defensive approach while developing their team chemistry.

Brondello acknowledged there’s still room for improvement. “We recognize that we’re not quite there yet. We’re focused on being intentional about our play and putting in the effort.”

However, the start of their season will pose challenges. After playing the Aces, they’ll hit the road for games against Chicago and Indiana.

Cloud seems ready for what’s ahead. “The season’s not determined by its start; it’s about where we are at mid-season and the progress we make toward the end and playoffs,” she said. “I’m excited for Saturday. When that game starts, you’ll see a focused Liberty team, working to improve little by little.”
