Liberty handle Wings to inch closer to clinching top WNBA playoff spot

ARLINGTON, Texas — Breanna Stewart scored 27 points, Sabrina Ionescu had 14 points and 11 of New York's season-high 33 assists, and the Liberty cruised to a 105-91 win over the Dallas Wings on Tuesday night.

New York (30-6) became just the second team in WNBA history to win 30 games in a season's first 36 games, joining the 2023 Las Vegas Aces.

The Liberty is three games behind second-place Minnesota (27-9), which plays at New York on Sunday.

New York shot 55 percent from the field and made 16 of 29 3-pointers.

Ionescu made four 3-pointers, and Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Leonie Fiebic added three apiece.

Stewart made all three of his 3-pointers in the first quarter and scored 15 points in the quarter, while Dallas was held to just 18 points.

Fiebic made New York's eighth 3-pointer (on just 13 attempts) with 8:17 left in the second quarter to extend the lead to 36-22.

Meanwhile, Dallas went 8-of-20 overall.

Liberty ended the first half up 58-43 behind Stewart's 19 points.

Dallas closed the gap to 72-64 with 5:14 left in the third quarter, but New York used a 15-5 run led by six points from Fivich to regain the lead with an 87-69 victory.

New York held a double-digit lead for the entire fourth quarter.

Jones had 19 points for New York and Fiebic added 16 off the bench.

Betnijah Laney-Hamilton had 10 points.

Arike Ogunbowale scored 23 points and Natasha Howard added 21 points for Dallas (9-27).

Teela McCowan added 11 points and Maddie Siegrist added 10 points, her first double-figure scoring performance since June 17.

The two teams meet again on Thursday.
