The search for Sandy Brondello’s successor is ongoing, but the Liberty might soon make a decision.
One strong internal candidate is assistant coach Sonia Laman, who joined Brondello’s staff last offseason.
Sources indicate that Laman is a contender for the head coaching position.
General manager Jonathan Kolb emphasized in last month’s exit interview that the selection process would be thorough. He is reportedly interested in candidates with NBA experience. Kolb also mentioned previously that the team seeks to interview a range of diverse candidates.
Raman is part of the group under consideration.
She has extensive experience as a college head coach and has also spent time on the benches in both the NBA and WNBA.
Former Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins praised Laman for her deep understanding of the game and her exceptional teaching skills. These qualities helped the Liberty choose her to defend their title last winter.
Raman aligns well with the analytical mindset of the Liberty’s front office. In a midseason discussion, she described her approach as “very analytical,” while acknowledging the complexities behind statistics.
“When I come across a stat, I usually watch the related clip to see if the number holds up,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of context.
Raman’s coaching career began at MIT in 2008, where she led the women’s team for 12 years, making it to the NCAA Division III Tournament twice and winning the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference championships in 2018 and 2019. She earned the title of NEWMAC Coach of the Year twice and remains the winningest coach in the program’s history.
After her successful tenure at MIT, she joined Jenkins’ staff in Memphis ahead of the 2020-21 season. She initially focused on player development and scouting before concentrating on defensive strategies to enhance the Grizzlies’ performance.
Her proactive approach helped her build a strong rapport with Jenkins, leading to increased responsibilities over time.
Laman reportedly interviewed for several WNBA head coaching positions before joining the Liberty last season.
A long-time supporter of the league, Laman credited assistant coach Zach O’Brien for aiding her transition into the WNBA.
Working closely with players like Rebecca Gardner and Kennedy Burke, she has received commendation for her support throughout challenging times during the season. Gardner has noted that Laman helped keep her focused, particularly as the lineup adjusted.
Given her familiarity with the team dynamics and relationships with key players, Laman might have an edge compared to other candidates.
If appointed, she would make history as the first Indian-American head coach in either the NBA or WNBA.
She has expressed pride in representing Indian Americans and believes it’s essential for young people to see that coaching at this level is an achievable goal. “I take that responsibility seriously,” she remarked. “I want to do everything I can so that others have the opportunity, too.”
Her profile would undoubtedly rise if she takes the helm.
