Liberty’s Winning Streak Snapped by Fever

INDIANAPOLIS – The Liberty’s impressive nine-game winning streak came to an end Saturday, as they lost 102-88 to the Fever.

This defeat also impacts their standing in the commissioner’s cup rankings.

Before this game, the Liberty was in a favorable position to host the Seattle Storm in the Championship Game on July 1st.

Unfortunately, these chances have taken a hit due to recent losses.

Currently, the Liberty holds a record of 9-1 this season and 3-1 in the Commissioners Cup.

Though they match the Fever with a 3-1 record, they do have the tiebreaker advantage.

Despite the setback against the Sun earlier in the week, Indiana appears to be the leading contender in the Eastern Conference for this season’s championship.

“It is what it is. We can’t change it,” said Liberty coach Sandy Brondello. “We wanted to be there, but we definitely need some significant help on our part. Ultimately, it’s all about which team performs best at the end of the season.”

Johnquell Jones did not travel to Indiana as she continues her recovery from a right ankle injury.

Brondello mentioned that Jones is “progressing well” and is expected to play in the upcoming game on Tuesday.

“We’re being cautious,” Brondello added. “That’s the most important thing. Especially now, I don’t want players on the court unless they’re at 100%.”

This marked the second consecutive game that Jones missed due to her injury.

Complicating matters, Liberty will also be without Leonie Fevich for the foreseeable future due to Eurobasket commitments.

With both Jones and Fevich sidelined, Nyara Sabally and Kennedy Burke stepped into starting roles.

Sabally had a solid performance, contributing 10 points, nine rebounds, and a career-high four steals in nearly 31 minutes of play.

On the other hand, Burke struggled offensively, finishing with three points, three rebounds, and three assists while missing all three of her three-point attempts.

Defensively, the Liberty seemed to falter, allowing the Fever to capitalize on their mistakes.

New York left some corners open, which did not bode well for them. Lexie Hull sank three three-pointers, along with two from Sydney Colson.

“The Fever executed well; we had a lot of defensive breakdowns, and they made us pay for it,” Brondello noted. “There was way too much space out there, and we need to improve our communication. There’s a lot to learn here, and we’re not quite where we need to be.”
