Jonquel Jones Stays with New York Liberty
Jonquel Jones is set to remain with the New York Liberty, as she’s finalizing a multi-year contract, according to various sources. This news was reported on Saturday and marks a significant first step for the Liberty as they navigate the free agency period.
Following the announcement about Jones, the Liberty made another move, signing free agent Sato Sabally. Additionally, Spanish forward/center Raquel Carrera has been brought on board with a training camp contract. This rookie deal is valued at $270,000, the minimum for first-year players.
Last season, Jones showcased her talent with an MVP-level performance but faced a setback when an injury kept her off the court for about a month. During her time playing, she averaged 13.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists across 31 games.
Carrera, who is 24 years old, has emerged as one of Europe’s promising young talents. She made her international debut when she was just 14 and has spent the last several years with Valencia Basket, which is where she currently plays during the WNBA offseason.
In 2021, the Atlanta Dream selected Carrera as the 15th overall pick, breaking records as the highest-paid Spanish player in the WNBA draft. The Liberty obtained her draft rights in June 2022. Her presence will certainly bolster the frontcourt, which struggled with injuries throughout the previous season, providing added size and versatility as she can play both power forward and center.
It will be interesting to see how Carrera adjusts to the league’s speed and intensity. There are still moves to be made in free agency; both Sabrina Ionescu and Brianna Stewart are yet to officially confirm their returns. The Liberty have also extended a qualifying offer to Rebecca Gardner, signaling their intention to re-sign Marin Johannes.
As the off-season progresses, training camp will kick off on April 19th, leading up to the season start on May 8th.
This is an evolving story, so keep an eye out for the latest updates.
