Key Liberty Player Out for Match Against Lynx
MINNEAPOLIS — The New York Liberty will be missing a crucial player for their game on Saturday against the Minnesota Lynx.
Leonie Fivic, a two-way wing for the Liberty, will sit out again due to a left foot injury, marking her third consecutive missed game.
This absence means New York loses its top perimeter defender just as they face one of the strongest teams in the league.
At 6-foot-4, Fivic’s absence puts more pressure on her teammates to elevate their performance.
Additionally, her missing presence means fewer scoring opportunities for the team.
Though Fivic doesn’t seem overly concerned with individual shot attempts, she certainly keeps track of them.
Fortunately, the Liberty still boasts other scoring threats, including stars like Brianna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu.
This season, Fivic has been shooting an impressive 45.1 percent from the floor, with a career-high of 7.3 attempts per game. She’s also hitting 43.3 percent from beyond the arc, averaging 10 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.2 steals across 14 starts.
In a recent victory against the Lynx on July 3, she contributed 13 points along with four assists, three rebounds, and three steals. Notably, during her time on the court, New York outscored Minnesota by 18 points.
After that game, Fivic returned to the gym to practice but was sidelined the following week due to what coach Chris DeMarco described as being “sore all over.” Since then, she hasn’t played.
Further complicating matters, DeMarco mentioned that Fivic underwent additional tests, including an MRI, although the team hasn’t revealed the results.
The Liberty have been grappling with injury issues this season. Injuries in the last year hindered their title defense, and this season they have played with less depth than ever.
Currently, Sato Sabally is out as she continues concussion protocols after her second head injury in eight months, and she isn’t traveling with the team to Minnesota.
In addition, both Pauline Astier (left ankle) and Rebecca Allen (nose) are uncertain for the upcoming game against the Lynx.
This season has seen New York fielding 10 different starting lineups over 22 games due to various injuries and absences.
