Incident at Asbury Park Beach
A sunny day at the beach took a shocking turn this past Wednesday at Third Avenue Beach in Asbury Park. Lifeguards were alerted to a distressing situation involving a young woman caught in a beach umbrella.
Upon arrival, a fellow lifeguard discovered her on the ground with an umbrella stake lodged in her left shoulder, sticking out a good distance from her back, according to Asbury Park Fire Chief Kevin Keddy. To facilitate her safe transport to a hospital, first responders had to cut the umbrella stake.
The victim was known to be quite alert and cautious, and her condition seemed stable during the rescue, Keddy remarked. It’s quite a frightening scene, really, but thankfully she was aware enough to call for help.
Keddy also advised that securing beach umbrellas firmly in the sand is crucial, noting that these incidents have become increasingly frequent. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently reported that airborne beach umbrellas can pose serious risks, even resulting in fatalities.
This event serves as a harsh reminder of beach safety, particularly with summer approaching. Meanwhile, as beachgoers enjoy the sun, staying aware of their surroundings is more important than ever. Emergency workers and local officials are hopeful that this young woman will recover swiftly.
