Lifeguard Rescues Deer from Ocean in Florida
A lifeguard came to the aid of a young deer struggling in the waters off the central Florida coast on Sunday, after beachgoers noticed the animal in distress.
This unusual event took place near Flagler Beach Pier, where crowds spotted the deer approximately 300 yards from shore.
Witnesses reported that lifeguards acted swiftly, navigating through rough waves and concerns about nearby sharks to reach the deer.
Two lifeguards managed to get to the animal, using rescue equipment to guide it back to safety.
“There’s always work to do. Whether it’s a human or, in this case, a deer, saving lives is what it’s all about,” stated Chase Hunter, a senior lifeguard at Flagler Beach, following the incident.
Once back on land, paramedics assisted the rescuers in leading the deer to the nearby woods.
Such rescues are not a common occurrence, and lifeguards typically deal with various animal-related situations, including the risk of deer being preyed upon by sharks.
A witness expressed gratitude on social media, saying, “Thank you so much for helping save the baby deer. It was an intense hour and a half swimming effort.”
Details surrounding how the deer ended up far from the shore remain uncertain.
Locals speculated that changes in the animal’s habitat may have contributed to its predicament.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission notes that deer are proficient swimmers, often seen crossing small bodies of water throughout the state.
Adult female white-tailed deer typically weigh around 95 pounds, while males average about 125 pounds.
“We prioritize the safety of both the public and the environment, so while this was a unique and successful rescue, it’s essential to consider all aspects,” remarked Stephen Cox from Flagler Beach Fire Rescue.
Last year, the agency was involved in nearly 250 rescues and implemented numerous preventive measures to protect the public from dangerous currents.
