The Mets finally woke up in the eighth inning during the early Sunday game.
Francisco Lindor launched a go-ahead homer, kicking off a fun sequence for the Mets. Mark Vientos added an insurance RBI, and Brandon Nimmo followed with a comforting two-run home run.
With that rally wrapped up, the Mets faced the Cubs in a game that started at 12:06 PM, securing a 6-2 victory at Citi Field in the deciding match of the series.
This marked the Mets’ second consecutive series win, bouncing back after dropping the previous two.
Griffin Canning was impressive for the Mets over six innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five, while giving up only one home run to Pete Crow-Armstrong.
This was Canning’s fifth straight start with minimal runs allowed, and his ERA now stands at 2.36.
Luis Torrens provided an RBI triple that generated the game’s opening run. Sterling Marte hit a shot that bounced off the left-center fence, ricocheting between outfielders Seiya Suzuki and Crow-Armstrong after Torrens’ run.
Canning found himself in a bit of trouble after giving up a leadoff single to Dansby Swanson and walking Justin Turner, but he managed to retire the next three batters.
Nemo and Marte both singled with two outs in the fourth, yet they were stranded when Torrens could not convert.
Luisangel Acuña added a single in the fifth before getting caught stealing.
Crow-Armstrong leveled the score in the sixth with a homer, connecting with a 94-mph fastball from Canning that went deep into right field, marking his tenth of the season.
Torrens exited the game in the sixth after taking a foul tip, with Francisco Alvarez stepping in to catch.
In the sixth, Vientos hit a go-ahead homer with two outs, driving a first-pitch fastball from Matthew Boyd deep to left field.
Nico Hoerner then tied the game in the seventh with an RBI double, as Michael Bush scored from second, marking the first run Canning had given up in his last four outings.
In the ninth, Lindor got things going with a hit, followed by Pete Alonso doubling. Vientos then brought Alonso home, and Nimmo capped it off with a two-run blast.
