My Take on Why a 24-Team Playoff Won’t Change Scheduling for Tougher Games

Let’s be honest here—what real reason do schools have to schedule challenging out-of-conference games unless, of course, they’re getting a substantial financial boost from ESPN? For example, Indiana kicked off its football season quite late, not until October 10, when they faced Nebraska. And while the home game against Northwestern might seem significant, let’s not pretend that playing them is a major highlight anymore.

Many of these programs simply lack the depth to manage tough schedules. Why complicate things any further? Coaches like Cignetti have it figured out. They treat the early season like a preseason, allowing their transferred quarterbacks to settle in while aiming for that playoff berth. To win the title in January, Indiana needs to secure three wins—now with a 24-team tournament, they’ll have to notch four.

So, what’s the value in playing tougher early games? More injury risks, potential quarterback losses, and the strain of added travel. It’s hard to see Indiana changing its approach without significant shifts in conference dynamics, like the creation of super conferences along with a ban on games against programs like the MAC or Conference USA.

Some Quick Thoughts:

  1. College football really shouldn’t complain if it starts resembling college basketball. Honestly, unless you’re obsessed, regular-season college basketball games shouldn’t cause anyone angst. Remember last year? An 8-4 Iowa would’ve made the basketball tournament—let that settle in.
  2. CFB is eager to dominate that gap weekend between the AFC/NFC matchups and the Super Bowl. Personally, I’m not craving more college football in late January. By then, I’m pretty much over it, as the championship is set for January 25 this year.
  3. I’m curious how they’ll fill conference championship weekend since it seems certain they won’t go without games the weekend after Thanksgiving. Will they push rivalry week to December? I doubt that. What do you think would garner more ad revenue: random SEC matchups or classic rivalries like Bama-Auburn or Ohio State-Michigan?
  4. If you’re a top college athlete potentially headed for the first round of the draft, how do you feel about more high-stakes games and the risk of physical tolls on your body?

Shoutout to Lindsey Vonn for Staying Committed to Fitness

At 41, Vonn could easily take the easy route, starting a podcast and lounging around discussing whatever while sipping wine. But instead, she’s hitting the gym and keeping herself fit. Rather than spewing political opinions on her platform like so many do, she’s actually enjoying life—traveling in Europe and embracing the good times. This weekend marks her 42nd birthday, and I say, go out and celebrate with your new boyfriend, Lindsey. Enjoy!

Do We Really Need a Flying Car?

Can you envision ever needing a car capable of flying in your suburban neighborhood? The highlight of that car would likely be its incredible acceleration—0 to 60 in under a second. Just imagine showcasing that feature to your friends after a game of golf!

Mailbag: Concerts and Politics

  • Nick asks: If you were at a concert and the artist began spouting a leftist agenda, would you get up and leave?

Kinsey: The only time I seriously contemplated walking out was during a Bob Dylan performance back in the 1990s in Dayton, OH. Bob was seated and mumbled through nearly the entire show for 70 minutes. While mumbling is part of his charm, this was more like mumbling that crossed the line into hard to follow. I would definitely not recommend a Dylan concert to anyone.

• A Note from Dave in Kitty Hawk: I appreciate you highlighting a common sentiment. Sometimes there’s nothing better than unwinding with a show like ‘In the Kitchen with David’—especially around the holidays. My wife even prefers it over the political ad breaks that interrupt Hallmark movies. There’s something relaxing about watching them serve up holiday meals, even if the price per pound makes you second-guess your sanity.

• John S. Chimes in: The Cowboys are hitting Sunday night football this week with Cris Collinsworth in the booth. Will he say “Schotty” more during this game than Herbstreit did last week? I can’t help but wonder if John Madden would’ve referred to Marty Schottenheimer in that way.

Why Not Invite Friends Over?

• Brandon from Northern Kentucky: I reckon this is a thought-provoking question. We’ve not had anyone over for a decade—only family for birthdays and events post-COVID. My wife doesn’t say it, but I suspect she worries about being judged.

It’s interesting; we moved into a bigger house over a decade ago to entertain, yet here we are, not doing it. We’re in our 40s with three busy kids. We enjoy relaxing as much as anyone, but it’s probably high time we have some friends or family over just for the sake of it.

• Chris B. from NC: My experience seems different; we often host gatherings. Just the other night, we had a dinner party with a delicious spread—charcuterie, prime rib, and homemade desserts. Believe me, it was all well under what we’d spend going out, and the ambiance is always better at home, making it more relaxing.

And that’s a wrap for this week! The weather is taking a turn; it’s time for chili weather! Picture a comfy setup with hoodies and blankets while we dive deep into college football season. Enjoy the games, and I’ll catch you all tomorrow!
