Lionel Messi’s family has announced that his father, Jorge, is facing health issues but is “recovering and doing well.”
At 38 years old, Messi was visibly emotional after scoring his first goal against Algeria on Tuesday, describing the day as “difficult and complicated” in his comments to reporters.
In response to ongoing speculation about Jorge’s health, the family issued a statement criticizing the “lack of care, respect, and thoughtfulness regarding a deeply personal family matter.”
They reported that Jorge, who is 68, is being monitored by medical professionals and requested “discretion and humanity” during this time.
No specific information about his health challenges has been shared.
This week, an Argentine TV host stepped down after wrongly reporting that Jorge had passed away.
“The family wants to clarify that only close relatives have accurate information about Jorge’s condition,” the statement explained. “Any accounts or claims not directly from the family or its official channels should not be taken as valid.”
They emphasized the need for responsibility and compassion, stating that speculating about an individual’s health and the well-being of their loved ones is inappropriate. They expressed gratitude for the kindness and concern shown while requesting that Jorge’s privacy, as well as the family’s, be respected during this time.
When asked about his tears after scoring against Algeria, Messi remarked that they were unrelated to football.
Throughout his illustrious career, Jorge has acted as Messi’s manager and agent.
Messi completed a hat-trick against Algeria and has now matched former Germany striker Miroslav Klose with 16 goals, placing him at the top of the World Cup’s all-time scoring list.
He will be looking to extend his record in the upcoming match against Austria on Monday.
