Lionel Messi is back in LA for a matchup against Son Heung-min

The last time I witnessed Lionel Messi live in Los Angeles, it felt like seeing a comet dash across the sky — breathtaking and brief, almost oddly unfair.

That was back in September 2023.

Fortunately, this dazzling presence will return this Saturday night.

MLS Opening Night at BMO Stadium will see the Los Angeles Football Club play against Inter Miami CF, marking Messi’s only planned visit to Los Angeles this season. It feels less like a regular league match and more like a global event; a city that has always embraced and expected stardom welcomes him back.

Messi’s impact goes beyond just appearances; he transforms entire markets.

Since he joined Miami in 2023, he has completely reshaped the franchise’s identity, turning it from a second thought into a powerhouse. With titles like the Supporters Shield and league cup, and aspirations for an MLS Cup title in 2025, stadiums from coast to coast in Canada have seen overwhelming attendance.

The aura surrounding Inter Miami has soared thanks to Messi. The soon-to-open Miami Freedom Park stands as a billion-dollar testament to ambition — one could say it should have a sign outside reading, “This stadium was made possible by Messi.”

And even at 38, he plays as if he’s defying time itself.

He’s not one to coast through matches, soaking up applause as though it were a farewell tour. Instead, he creates his own narrative. Take the tense moments of the 2025 MLS Cup Final, where it was Messi who sparked a critical defensive turnover against Vancouver. The statistics will show assists and goals, but the trophies endure.

However, as he arrives in Los Angeles this weekend, it won’t be solely an occasion to worship him; the competitive spirit is palpable.

Opposing him will be Son Heung-min, the LAFC star and global icon, marking the first time these two legends will share the same MLS field. It feels like a clash of continents under the bright lights of Los Angeles.

Son joked last December, saying, “This year we let Messi win, but next year… we will come out on top.” Funny remarks can take on a life of their own, can’t they?

LAFC feels equipped to rival Miami and hold their own without hesitation. We’ll know more Saturday night.

Yet, the spotlight will likely still shine brightest on Messi.

When he steps into Los Angeles, he enters a city that knows championships well. The Dodgers have clinched back-to-back World Series titles, and the Lakers proudly display their banners. Legends abound here, and LA knows how to juxtapose myth with reality—and Messi often surpasses both.

This Saturday will be his only scheduled appearance in 2026. Just one night. It’s a singular chance to watch the greatest soccer player of all time orchestrate a game, not through a screen, but right in front of you.

Los Angeles will turn out not just to see if Son can claim the title or if LAFC can challenge Miami’s growing empire, but to soak in that electric atmosphere again. Those moments before a free kick. The collective breath held in anticipation. Those impossible angles bending into reality.

Messi’s visits are infrequent.

But when he does come, the city always remembers.
