Messi Leads Argentina to Victory
Lionel Messi is once again proving why many consider him the best soccer player in the world.
The Argentine star guided his team to a 3-0 win over Algeria in their opening group stage match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday night. Remarkably, he scored all three goals, marking his first career hat trick in World Cup competition.
These goals tied him with Germany’s Miroslav Klose for the all-time scoring record in World Cup history. It was a particularly emotional moment for Messi; he broke into tears after netting his first goal.
After the match, he reflected on his emotions, saying, “Tears after the first goal? I was having a tough time. It had nothing to do with soccer. Those feelings were because of that,” though he didn’t go into further detail. He expressed gratitude towards his teammates and coaching staff for their support.
Messi has been dealing with a hamstring injury that affected his play in the Major League Soccer season with Inter Miami. Still, he seemed to be in good shape during a recent friendly against Iceland.
“It’s my sixth World Cup, but I still feel like I’m in good shape,” Messi stated. “Fortunately, I’m feeling good and was able to win a tough match today. It’s critical to start the tournament with a win.” This victory is significant, especially given the challenges of World Cup matches.
His outstanding performance drew a positive response from Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who shared a few goat emojis to highlight Messi’s achievements.
Messi’s participation marks the culmination of nearly two decades of excellence on the field, including leading Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup.
In a heartfelt moment, he concluded, “I’m very happy that I was able to overcome everything that happened to me. It’s great to be alive right now. I’m so happy and grateful for this amazing group. I’m having so much fun.”
