Lionel Richie Offers Caution to Emerging Stars After Chapel Lawn Incident

Lionel Richie is well aware that fame can come with its own set of complications. He recently shared some thoughts aimed at new celebrities following a backlash faced by Chapel Lawn over a particular fan interaction.

In a conversation with his son-in-law, Joel Madden, the lead singer of Good Charlotte, Richie noted that he rarely hears complaints from fans approaching his stepfather in public. He reflected, “I used to be invisible,” admitting it’s tough to ignore the eagerness of fans who just want to connect. “They want to tell you something, and you can see it on their faces,” he added. “For me, ignoring them is the worst.”

Rio’s Mayor Bans Chapel Lawn from Performances Amid Controversy

Richie emphasized the importance of appreciating fan support. He mentioned that sometimes meeting someone you truly admire can be disappointing. “I made a promise to myself: I’m never going to do that. Never,” he said.

He cautioned that the glitz of stardom doesn’t suit everyone. “What often happens is people come into the business and say there’s one thing they haven’t calculated: I hope you like people,” he remarked. He illustrated a common transition, saying, “You spend the first half of your career saying, ‘Look at me,’ and then, once you become famous, it flips to, ‘Don’t look at me.’”

Richie continued, expressing a bemusement at wanting fame while being uncomfortable with the very people who contribute to it. “The universe gave you what you asked for,” he explained. “You have to be able to relate.”

Last week, during his performance at Lollapalooza, an incident involving Chapel Lawn came to light. According to professional soccer player Jorginho Frello, a security guard allegedly reprimanded Chapel’s daughter after he noticed her having breakfast at a hotel in São Paulo.

Chapel, 28, addressed the backlash on social media, defending herself and denying any misconduct after the situation caught the attention of Rio’s mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere. He stated that Chapel was no longer welcome to perform in the city. “As long as I’m in charge of this city, she will never perform at Todo Mundo No Rio,” he declared, leaving quite an impact.

Chapel responded from her bed on social media, saying, “I couldn’t see anything… No one approached me.” She explained that she hadn’t directed any guards to speak to the mother and child in question.

She emphasized, “I don’t hate people who are fans of my music… It’s really sad if you feel uncomfortable because someone is guessing something.”

Jorginho posted about what he deemed a “very upsetting situation” regarding his family and the Chapel incident. He claimed that his 11-year-old daughter was rebuked by security for merely glancing at the singer.

Detailing the moment, he mentioned that she just walked by, smiling without any further interaction. “The worst part was that she didn’t even come close to me,” he recalled.

He expressed disappointment at being treated poorly by people who should understand the significance of fans. “It’s sad to be treated like this, especially a child,” he concluded, hoping it would serve as a moment of introspection for all involved.
