Lionel Richie Opens Up About His First Marriage Scandal
Lionel Richie has finally addressed the controversy that ended his first marriage nearly 40 years ago. It was June 1988 when his then-wife, Brenda Harvey Richee, was arrested at a Beverly Hills apartment for confronting Richie and his now-wife, Diane Alexander, at around 2:30 AM.
This incident made headlines back then, yet Richie never spoke publicly about it—until now. In his upcoming memoir “Really,” the 76-year-old singer reflects on that chaotic night.
Richie reveals, “What very few people knew was that Brenda and I were separated.” He recounts trying to escape to a beach place for some solitude but ended up confronted by Brenda, leading to a volatile clash.
“I remembered thinking, how do you diffuse this explosive situation?” he shared. “I figured if I left, perhaps she’d follow me, but the argument escalated.” The police were eventually called due to the ruckus, and Brenda was arrested on several charges, including assault and vandalism.
Reflecting on the aftermath, Richie mused, “The tale became a scandal for the ages. Thankfully, there was no social media back then.” Reports detailed how officers found furniture broken in the apartment. Brenda even had kicked Richie during the altercation before departing.
Following the incident, Richie faced intense scrutiny from friends and the media. He remarks that coping with the drama was especially challenging for someone with his Southern upbringing, which traditionally downplays disputes.
Richie acknowledged the heartache Brenda felt, stating, “The saddest day of my marriage was knowing that although we loved each other, our history made reconciliation nearly impossible.” He admitted the tumultuous event marked a turning point for their relationship.
He and Brenda had met in the early ’70s as students and married in 1975. They entered parenthood when they became legal guardians of Nicole Richie in 1983, later adopting her officially in 1990.
Interestingly, Richie didn’t shy away from romantic reflections. He credited his family as his anchor amidst the chaos but noted that travel and the pressures of fame took a toll on his marriage to Brenda, which finally ended in 1993.
Later, Richie married Diane Alexander in 1995 and welcomed two children, Miles and Sofia. Their marriage, however, faced its hurdles and concluded in 2004. Reflecting on both unions, Richie emphasized how vital learning from past relationships is for personal growth.
Today, Richie has been with Lisa Parigi since 2014, describing her as “my heart.” In retrospective interviews, he expressed the unpredictability of love, emphasizing its complexities and nuances.
