Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell remained in a local hospital overnight after sustaining a serious neck injury in Sunday’s Week 8 game against the Minnesota Vikings.
Campbell was injured in the fourth quarter at Ford Field after colliding with Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson. He lay motionless on the field before medical staff placed him on a backboard and took him off by cart. The Lions went on to win 19-15. Several teammates were visibly emotional as Campbell was helped away.
After the game, Lions coach Dan Campbell said he had no further details about the linebacker’s condition. He asked the team to kneel and pray for his player, and later told reporters that Campbell and his family were in the team’s thoughts.
The Lions said Jack Campbell was resting at a local hospital and would stay there for further evaluation and monitoring. The team said it would share updates when available.
Hockenson also sent his support to Campbell and his family. He said he had been involved in the play but hadn’t seen exactly what happened. The two players both attended the University of Iowa, Hockenson noted, adding that although they compete against each other, players understand the risks of the game and never want to see someone get hurt.
Campbell became a Pro Bowler and earned his first All-Pro selection after the 2025 season, when he recorded 176 tackles and five sacks. A first-round pick out of Iowa in 2023, he had played in every game of his NFL career before Sunday.
In seven games this season, Campbell had recorded 57 tackles and recovered one fumble. He signed a four-year contract extension with Detroit last May.
