Frank Ragnow Reflects on His Unexpected Retirement
Frank Ragnow is addressing the circumstances surrounding his surprise retirement last year. The former center for the Detroit Lions shared insights into his sudden departure, revealing that he was attempting to push through another season, but ultimately, his body had other plans.
At an event in Michigan, Ragnow expressed candidly, “I want to be straightforward—I was trying to have the will to keep playing, but my body was saying no, and I felt kind of stuck.” He mentioned that he hadn’t anticipated retiring in the summer, hoping to convey strength to players and fans alike. “I wanted everyone to think, ‘You can do it’… that’s part of who I am,” he added.
Ragnow continued, reflecting on his discomfort with the situation. “It’s not easy; it’s a bit awkward, like when you have several kids and don’t want to turn it into a sob story,” he said. “I’m fine, really, but it leaves you questioning if it’s worth the effort. That decision was tough for me; I wrestled with it.” Now, having turned 30, he attempted to return in November but didn’t pass his medical exam due to a Grade 3 hamstring strain, which posed risks of sidelining him for the rest of the season.
He noted, “I got injured right before I was set to return, which was pretty disappointing. Perhaps I should have listened to my body better, but that’s just how it worked out. It’s all part of the learning curve.” He reassured that he can at least rest easy knowing he gave it his all for both the team and the fans, even if it didn’t pan out as hoped.
Ragnow, who was drafted in the first round by the Lions in 2018, enjoyed a successful seven-season run with the team and was selected to the Pro Bowl four times before his surprising retirement due to health issues.
He had previously faced multiple injuries during his career, particularly issues related to his toe, including a significant absence in 2021 due to severe turf toe.
