Controversy at Lipscomb Academy Over Tribute to Charlie Kirk
Lipscomb Academy, a private K-12 school affiliated with Lipscomb University, is addressing issues that arose from its response to students wishing to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Reports indicate that administrator Jesse Savage directed students to remove red ties they wore in tribute to Kirk during a school event on September 12.
Savage’s request led to some complaints after a small group of 12 to 15 students decided to wear the ties as a mark of respect. A representative from the school later clarified that no disciplinary actions were taken against the students. Following the incident, the administrators engaged with the students on September 15 to discuss their experiences and how they might express their respect for Kirk in the future. This resulted in the students planning another occasion to wear the red ties.
In response to the way the situation was managed, the academy issued an apology. Complaints from parents intensified, especially after it was perceived that enforcing the dress code policy had escalated tensions. On September 25, it was announced that Savage would transition from his role as principal to become the senior academic director, which was already in progress before the dress code incident. The academy maintained that Savage’s new position reflects his skills, developed over the past year.
Despite the academy’s statements, parental dissatisfaction lingered, and on September 26, more than 20 protesters gathered outside the school during drop-off, voicing their concerns. Some demonstrators stood behind police barricades while others welcomed students near the school stairs. This combination of support for Savage and criticism of the academy’s actions highlighted the divided sentiments within the community.
In related news, Utah Valley University is also grappling with the aftermath of Kirk’s recent assassination, with an acknowledgment of the traumatic impact on the campus community. Meanwhile, Savannah Chrisley, a well-known TV personality, expressed her support for the students at Lipscomb Academy, commending their bravery in honoring Kirk. Her remarks emphasized a perceived failure on the part of the school to uphold values of courage and unity.
