Understanding Adoption and Its Challenges
The Bible often refers to God as the “Father of the fatherless,” emphasizing the importance of caring for orphans. Many believers take this command to heart by choosing adoption as a way to help. While the journey to healing broken situations can be uplifting and rewarding, the emotional challenges of adoption are less frequently discussed.
In a recent episode of “Unshamed,” the Robertson family shares their own adoption experiences with Lisa Harper, a best-selling author and podcaster.
Lisa, who was in her 40s and single at the time, felt compelled to act after a sermon highlighted the significance of supporting widows and orphans, as mentioned in the book of James.
After years of uncertainty, she decided to adopt a baby from Haiti. She recalled a touching story about a young girl whose mother struggled with a crack addiction and spent Christmas in a crack house.
However, right when Lisa was about to bring the baby home, the adoption unexpectedly fell apart.
Heartbroken, she returned home, but two weeks later, she received a transformative phone call. A friend in Haiti, working on a community project, informed her about a young mother who had died from AIDS, leaving her ailing daughter without care.
This friend felt a divine call to tell Lisa that she was meant to be the girl’s mother. Despite still mourning her earlier loss, Lisa responded with a heartfelt “Sign me up.”
“Missy is now 16 and thriving,” Lisa shared emotionally. “While she isn’t my hope, Jesus is my hope. Yet, she remains a remarkable blessing in my life.”
Reflecting on her past feelings of unworthiness, Lisa mentioned that Missy does not carry an “orphan spirit,” a struggle she had endured for years.
By the episode’s conclusion, emotional exchanges unfolded, with family members Jace, Al, and Zach Dasher all wiping away tears. To catch the full conversation, the episode can be viewed above.
