Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski Considers Collaboration with Democrats
On Monday, Alaska’s Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski hinted at the possibility of working alongside Democrats, but emphasized that her decision would hinge on how it benefits her constituents.
During a podcast interview with Gallen Deluke, she referred to this scenario as an “interesting hypothesis.” When asked if she might collaborate with Democrats should the Senate achieve a 50-50 split after the 2026 midterm elections, she expressed her primary motivation: “People know my motivation. That’s this love for Alaska and what I can do. So that’s my main goal. I have to understand how I can be the most effective for the people I serve,” she stated.
Murkowski acknowledged the struggles within her own party, though she also suggested that she doesn’t foresee significant improvements among Democrats. She pointed out that there are policies from the Democratic side that she strongly opposes.
When Deluke pressed her on whether aligning with Democrats could be part of a coalition to pass legislation, she responded, “There is some degree of openness in exploring something different to the current situation.”
The senator’s office did not provide comments when approached for clarification.
Notably, Murkowski was among seven Republicans who voted to convict former President Donald Trump during his second impeachment trial. She has also expressed criticism of Trump’s foreign policy, particularly regarding Ukraine, and recently voiced skepticism about fellow Senate Republicans’ willingness to support his proposed cuts.
Additionally, Murkowski voted in favor of twelve of President Biden’s nominees and aligned with him around 64% of the time in 2023, according to reports. Her recent actions included teaming up with other GOP senators to oppose the complete elimination of the Biden-era energy tax credit.
