‘Little Evidence of a True Insurrection’

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. released a statement Friday regarding the Jan. 6 prosecution, saying violent rioters should be punished, but the prosecution of many of the nonviolent protesters went too far. He said that.

Kennedy’s statement undermines Democratic efforts to portray the 2024 election as a “defense of democracy” and a referendum on the so-called “insurrection” that Democrats blame on former President Donald Trump Thing.

President Kennedy’s statement is below.

January 6th is one of the most polarizing topics in the political landscape. To understand this event and its aftermath, I am listening to people with different perspectives on it. I’d like to hear all opinions.

It is clear that many of the protesters on January 6th broke the law in what began as a protest but may have escalated into a riot. Because this happened at the encouragement of President Trump, and in the context of President Trump’s delusions that the election was stolen from him, many consider this an insurrection rather than a riot.

I haven’t looked closely at the evidence, but reasonable people, including Trump opponents, tell me there is little evidence of a real insurrection. They observed that the demonstrators were unarmed, had no plans or ability to seize power, and that President Trump himself had urged them to protest “peacefully.” .

Like many rational Americans, I am concerned that the momentum of the prosecution, long prison terms, and harsh treatment of J6 defendants may have been motivated by political objectives. This would fit an alarming pattern of government agencies such as the Department of Justice, IRS, SEC, and FBI becoming weaponized against political opponents.

Some of you, like me, may be upset by the government’s weaponization against him, even if you oppose Donald Trump and everything he stands for.

As President, I will appoint a special prosecutor (a person respected by all parties) to investigate whether prosecutorial discretion was abused for political purposes in this case, and I will correct any wrongs found. . Without an impartial rule of law, there can be no true democracy or moral governance. That’s why John Adams, a staunch patriot, defended British soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre in court. If we betray justice in pursuit of ideals, that betrayal will undermine what we achieve.

Both establishments are using J6 to add fuel to the fire of division in America. Both sides claim that a victory for their opponents would mean the end of democracy. Then anything to stop them is justified. We risk destroying democracy to protect it.

Rather than demonizing the opposition as an apocalyptic threat to democracy, focus on the issues and priorities of how they govern, rather than legal or dirty tricks. , let’s beat them at the voting booth. Presidents Trump and Biden both presided over a continued worsening of the national debt, an epidemic of chronic disease, government corruption, erosion of civil liberties, and entanglements with foreign militaries. Perhaps it is because the establishment parties have so little disagreement on these important issues that they run a campaign to demonize the opposition and everyone who supports the opposition.

Kennedy is unlikely to win enough delegates to challenge incumbent President Joe Biden, thanks to an anti-democratic superdelegation system that has become a barrier for insurgent candidates in the primaries. After it became clear that this was not possible, he left the Democratic Party.

Some polls show Kennedy with double-digit support over Trump and Biden. Trump leads Biden in most battleground states.
