Little League Responds to Court Ruling on Suspension
Little League baseball acknowledges the decision made by Judge Robert G. Marstein of Gloucester County Superior Court, though the organization doesn’t seem particularly thrilled about it.
In a recent twist, Marcorocco, a young player from Haddonfield, New Jersey, had his suspension lifted just hours before a crucial state tournament game on Thursday evening.
The twelve-year-old had been suspended after being ejected from a game for celebrating a home run by flipping his bat in the air.
His family filed a lawsuit right before the final match of the New Jersey Little League State Tournament, which compelled the league to comply with the court’s ruling.
“Little League International respects and supports the judge’s decision that allows players from Haddonfield to participate in the tournament despite last week’s incident,” the organization stated.
“While we adhere to the court’s orders, it’s disheartening that focus is diverted from the volunteers and community efforts that create a positive environment for players and families throughout the tournament,” they added.
Rocco’s celebration during a game against the Harrison Little League on July 16 led to his ejection and subsequent suspension.
Judge Marstein criticized the league for being unclear and inconsistent regarding their stance on bat flipping, contesting their argument that resolving the case would open the floodgates for parents to file lawsuits against officials’ decisions.
“There are no clear rules in Little League that forbid bat flipping. It’s neither illegal nor a violation of the league’s explicit rules,” Marstein noted in his decision.
In a follow-up statement, Little League reiterated its support for referees and their calls, emphasizing the importance of guidance in maintaining fair play amidst challenges faced by youth sports, including a national shortage of referees.
“We recognize the spirit of competition and appreciate the enthusiasm surrounding the tournament, but we must also prioritize player safety and sportsmanship among all participants and fans,” they concluded.
Haddonfield remains one of the last four teams competing in the state tournament and is set to play against Elmora at 8:30 PM.
