Adrian Melonk won the Seve Ballesteros Award for his outstanding play on the 2022-23 DP World Tour, but captain Luke Donald passed on him being selected for Europe’s Ryder Cup squad.
Understandably, Melonk was devastated and decided to join LIV Golf in January 2024.
“I don’t know, but if I had played in the Ryder Cup, I probably wouldn’t have come to LIV,” Melonk told James Corrigan. Telegraph Sports.
“What happened definitely made my choices easier. What I went through made me care more about myself and care less about what other people think of me and what other people think of me. I don’t care what you want anymore.”
Moments after Donald announced his team, Melonk admitted he felt “shocked” and “angry” ahead of last year’s Irish Open.
“To be honest, when [Donald] “I just stopped asking because I said I wasn’t going,” Melonk said on Sept. 6, 2023.
“I didn’t really hear much, to be honest. He was saying someone had to be home. It was obviously close and things like that. Of course, I would have been in his position. I didn’t want to. I knew it was tough for him. But it was a big shock, so I couldn’t concentrate much after that.”
In fact, Melonk immediately focused on playing golf. He also won the Andalusia Masters in October, proving to doubters that he belongs among Europe’s elite.
The 30-year-old Polish player continued to play well as the calendar changed from 2023 to 2024, with a strong showing in Australia in December and Dubai in January. He tied for 10th at the Dubai Invitational and finished second behind Rory McIlroy at the Dubai Desert Classic.
He then sat out the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, where he earned his 2024 card and joined LIV Golf.
“What happened at the Ryder Cup opened my eyes to how everything works,” Melonk said.
“That’s not what life is all about, especially when you’re a professional athlete. You have to make sure your family is good and that you yourself are good and feel good.”
Despite Melonk’s success throughout 2023, he often felt empty as he admitted he was not enjoying life as a professional golfer.
“People will say this move is about the money, but just as important is the lightening of the schedule,” Melonk said.
“The last two years I had some really great days, but to be honest, I didn’t really enjoy them that much. I was just walking down the street all the time. We didn’t have a proper home and I just packed my bags from hotel to hotel and airport to airport.”
Melonk spent 2023 traveling the world, playing in Dubai, Southern California, Florida, South Korea, Italy, Rochester and the Netherlands, all before the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club.
“During Christmas, I was sitting with my parents and my girlfriend and just going, ‘Oh, it’s been a great year, but I didn’t really enjoy it,'” Melonk recalled.
“When I won in Italy last May, I remember waking up on Monday and saying, ‘Okay, okay, I won the tournament.'” must be restarted. where is the joy? ”
Now Melonk faces a more manageable schedule at LIV Golf.
After the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in mid-January, Melonk made his LIV debut last week in Mayakoba, Mexico, finishing 47th with a total of five over.
This week, LIV Golf is in Las Vegas, competing alongside the Super Bowl. After this event, the circuit will take a break and will head to Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong in early March.
That should give Melonk plenty of time to rest, recover and practice.
Despite this, the 30-year-old has not lost sight of his ultimate goal of representing Europe with Bethpage Black in 2025.
“Obviously I didn’t like how I was handled last time, but if it’s possible to play in the Ryder Cup and I’m good enough, I’d love to be on the team,” Melonk said.
“I just have to work hard on my game, give my best performance and see what happens.”
No one knows what Europe’s Ryder Cup teams will look like in 2025. Perhaps by then the professional golf world will be united. Probably not.
In any case, Melonk still carries the burden of being snubbed this fall, as evidenced by his decision to join LIV.
