Liv Golf’s Future Looks Steady

It seems like Liv Golf is here to stay.

Now in its third year, the tour is experiencing a range of successes. As of now, they are competing in Spain, and their events are being broadcast on FS1. Remember when they first started? Securing a cable contract and ensuring diversity were major hurdles at that time.

Liv has its own set of rules compared to the PGA Tour, and honestly, that’s perfectly fine. With a format featuring 54 holes, team play, and shotgun starts, it may not seem all that different on the surface. But I think what’s significant is that it truly offers something unique.

These distinct elements appear to be helping Liv work toward a long-standing goal: gaining recognition in the official world golf rankings. The OWGR system is what ranks players globally and has always been key for invitations to the major tournaments.

In fact, Liv is again pushing for that OWGR designation, having announced its application last Friday.

Being included in the OWGR would be monumental for Liv and the professional golf community. Securing OWGR points would legitimize their standing in a way that’s been elusive since the tour’s inception. We’ve moved past merely discussing rankings—like putting Jon Rahm at 68—and now it’s more about reality and competitive significance.

Returning to our original point, Liv’s persistence suggests it’s not going anywhere soon. Talk of a merger fizzled out over a year ago, and the details surrounding that remain murky. If a merger were imminent, Liv might not feel the need to pursue it further. But perhaps there’s more to it—who can say for sure at this point?

Regardless, this is just another development in the evolving world of professional golf. And I’m interested to see where it leads.
