LIV Golf announces further events As part of the 2025 schedule, familiar spots and new locations will be featured, including South Korea and Indianapolis, Indiana.
However, the Saudi-backed circuit ignored requests from Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith. Both major champions wanted LIV to hold an event on a links course before the British Open Championship in hopes of better preparing for golf's oldest major.
Instead, the league will return to southern Spain from July 11 to 13, the week before Royal Portrush host their second Open in Northern Ireland. Valderrama Golf Club is the site of the 1997 Ryder Cup, often compared to Augusta National, and will host the LIV tournament for the third year in a row. This is the second consecutive season that this event will be held on this course just before the British Open.
Valderrama is definitely a phenomenal golf course and one of the highlights of the LIV golf season. But the problem lies in its position on the calendar. The golf course, along with the climate, is vastly different from the conditions players will face at the British Open the following week. It's no wonder so many PGA Tour stars compete each year at the Genesis Scottish Open, which takes place the week before the British Open. They want to get used to the weather and the completely different playing style of links golf.
“They were two complete opposites of golf,” Smith said. news.com.au on October 30th About this past year of back-to-back LIV Golf Valderrama events and Opens.
“It was really hot. [at Valderrama]and the ball gained considerable altitude before reaching the link [at Royal Troon]Probably not the best preparation in a fairly cold and windy location. ”
Three days after last year's Open at Royal Troon, ahead of LIV Golf's event in England. Rahm told Golf Digest's Evin Priest. He said he would like to see a LIV golf event held on a links-style course before the British Open, similar to what the PGA Tour does at Renaissance Club for the Genesis Scottish Open.
“I'm pushing it,” Rahm said. golf digest July 24th.
“There's a lot of work to do to adapt to links golf and get used to how the ball reacts on the greens and on the ground. I didn't think about it until later. [Royal Troon]But there's no denying how helpful it is to play at a links golf course the week before the Open. ”
Many LIV golf stars other than Rahm had a hard time adjusting to their surroundings this past July. Smith, who won at St Andrews in 2022, opened with a nine-over 80 but missed the cut at Royal Troon. Current U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau also missed the weekend.
Overall, five of the 16 LIV athletes who competed missed the cut, and only three finished in the top 20. Rahm finished tied for seventh place, eight strokes behind champion Xander Schauffele.
Perhaps their results would have been better if LIV had held an event in the British Isles before the British Open. Rahm and Smith certainly feel that way.
