LIV Golf’s Patrick Reed, Thomas Pieters to play in DP World Tour’s BMW International Open

Before the world’s best professional golfers gather in the birthplace of golf, Scotland, the PGA Tour will head to the Quad Cities for the John Deere Classic and the DP World Tour will host the BMW International Open in Munich, Germany.

LIV Golf’s Patrick Reed, currently ranked 101st in the world, is the player to watch this week in Bavaria. Unlike other LIV Golfers, Reed has no outstanding fines or sanctions and is therefore eligible to play in DP World Tour events. The same goes for Thomas Pieters, who narrowly missed out on winning the Soudal Open in his native Belgium in May. Pieters finished one stroke behind 37-year-old Nacho Elvira of Spain.

Reed also came up short last week after narrowly missing out at the Italian Open, where two spots for this year’s British Open are awarded through the British Open qualifying series, but fell short. Instead, Tom McKibbin, who lost in a playoff to Marcel Siem, and American Sean Crocker earned the two spots at Royal Troon.

The 2018 Masters champion is not currently on the field list for next week’s Genesis Scottish Open, the final event of the Open Qualifying Series, but that could change if Reed wins in Germany this week.

The R&A will invite the top three non-exempt players to next week’s British Open at Renaissance Club in North Berwick.

Other notable players competing at the BMW International Open include Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger, who is leaving LIV Golf at the end of 2023, former U.S. Open champion Martin Kaymer and Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald. Also competing this week are PGA Tour Champions stars Bernhard Langer, Thomas Bjorn, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Alex Cejka, who are fresh off LIV Golf’s Richard Bland’s second straight senior major win at the U.S. Senior Open at Newport Country Club.
